Book Review: THE CAUTIOUS MAIDEN by Dawn Crandall

Dawn Crandall’s fourth book in the Everstone Chronicles may just be her best yet, and considering how much I loved the other three, that is no small accomplishment!

Here’s what its about:

The Cautious Maiden Dawn Crandall

Violet Hawthorne is beyond mortified when her brother Ezra turns their deceased parents’ New England country inn into a brothel to accommodate the nearby lumberjacks but when Violet’s own reputation is compromised, the inn becomes the least of her worries. In an effort to salvage her good name, Violet is forced into an engagement with a taciturn acquaintance&, Vance Everstone.

As she prepares for a society wedding, Violet learns that her brother had staked her hand in marriage in a heated poker game with the unsavory Rowen Steele, and Ezra had lost. Now Rowen is determined to cash in on his IOU.

With danger stalking her and a new fiancé who hides both his emotion and his past, Violet must decide who to trust, and who to leave behind.

My Thoughts:

Dawn’s books have stood out to me since the first time I picked up her debut novel, The Hesitant Heiress. Not only is she a gifted writer, but a superb storyteller…and her heroes–sigh. Her books are different—and I mean good different. In a sea of third person novels, Dawn uses first person brilliantly to craft memorable characters, particularly strong heroines that I want to read again and again. I just can’t get them out of my mind.

And her latest novel, The Cautious Maiden is exceptionally unique. We all love a dashing rogue. But with the type of twist Dawn does so well, she takes the classic story of redemption off stage, giving God the glory, not the heroine, and allows us, the readers, the chance to learn to trust Vance along with Violet as the story unfolds. And if you’ve read The Bound Heart as I have, you won’t be too keen on believing Vance Everstone on page one, setting up a beautifully written story of trust, forgiveness, and transformation.

The romance sizzles. The story holds you glued to the page. The characters are unforgettable. I can’t recommend this book enough. Can’t wait to see what Dawn writes next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are entirely my own.
